Syllabus: Studio Clarinet

Studio Guidelines:
1. ALL students are required to have an email account and check it regularly.
All studio communication will be done through this medium.
2. Students are expected to attend all lessons. The instructor must be notified
at least twenty-four hours in advance if the student needs to be excused for
the lesson. Chronic medical illness needs to be documented with a doctor’s note.
3. Students are required to attend performances of their colleagues and clarinet
faculty. These events shall be posted at the beginning of the semester.
4. All students are required to attend studio class, which will be Tuesdays
1-1:50 in room 440.
5. All students must perform two times every semester (convocations,
competitions, chamber performances, recitals, etc...).This does not include
school ensembles. Freshmen are exempt from this policy.
6. Students enrolled for half-hour lessons should practice 1-2 hours daily and
hour students are expected to practice 3-4 hours daily.
7. Students should bring notebooks with them to their lessons every week and
record their assignments.
8. Students must have their clarinet in proper working condition for every
lesson.
9. All students should knock on the studio door at their lesson time, warmed up,
and ready to play. Please have instruments together as to be able to utilize
all lesson time properly. At the end of lessons students should take apart
their instruments outside of the clarinet studio.

3-ring notebook (hardbound) to keep all handouts and lesson information

Juries:
One or two weeks prior to the jury date, all students will be required to
perform at a pre-jury studio recital. Students are expected to have an
accompanist if needed for their piece. Scales should also be prepared for the
jury at the discretion of the instruction.
Recitals
All clarinet students are required to perform on the clarinet pre-jury recital
that will be held at the end of each semester. In addition to this, students
will play the following recitals:
Music education majors: half recital of 30 minutes of music during the senior
year.
Music Therapy majors: half recital of 30 minutes of music during the junior
year.
Performance minors: half recital of 30 minutes of music during the senior year.
Performance majors: half recital of 30 minutes of music during the junior year
and a full recital of 60 minutes of music during the senior year.
Graduate performance majors: full recitals of 60 minutes of music.
Honor Recital
Students will be nominated for Honor Recital auditions based on their jury from
the previous semester. Non-music majors must audition for the woodwind faculty
to be considered.
Teaching List:
All senior clarinet majors are required to create a repertoire list to be used
in teaching a beginning-level clarinetist. This project should include a rough
outline of fundamentals that are essential to producing a good sound and solid
technique. These lists will be evaluated each year and must be submitted before
the final jury date.
Scales:
All students are required to know all major and melodic minor key centers in the
following forms as found in the Baermann 3 exercise book:
1) Linear
2) Broken Chords
3) Thirds
Begin and end each scale on the tonic, encompassing the full range possible, and
using the melodic form of the minor scale. Students should also be proficient
in harmonic and melodic minor by their senior year. Music majors are required
to memorize all forms, except for minor thirds. All other majors are required
to memorize the linear form but may use the music for broken chords and thirds.
All students are required to take an annual spring scale test in which they will
show proficiency playing major and minor thirds and scales. The student may use
music for minor thirds only.
Grading:
It is the student’s responsibility to always have a good reed and an instrument that is in good
repair. No excuses!
1. Attendance for lessons:
a. An unexcused absence will affect a student’s grade. One unexcused absence will lower the grade one level.
b. Three unexcused absences will result in failure of the class
c. Any student who is sick should contact their professor 24 hours in advance
when possible. Lessons will be made up at the discretion of the professor.

4. Attendance and participation in weekly masterclasses.
5. At mid-term, students will be notified of their current grade if he/she is at
risk of failure.
6. Grading will be broken down as follows:
a. Weekly lessons - 60%
b. Performance jury - 20%
c. Scale Class Attendance/Scale Jury (Attendance is required at Scale Class for
undergraduate students) - 15%
d. Lesson/Recital Attendance - 5%
